Captain's Questionable Attitude makes Reporters See Red

By: Karthik Ramesh

We witnessed yet another dismal display of Indian batting yesterday when India took on Sri Lanka in the ongoing tri-series among India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. The ball was swinging around and the discipline of Sri Lankan bowling was hard to tackle because of the lack of discipline in Indian batting. I wonder whether every one in the Indian team has shifted his mindset from a twenty20 game to a 50 over game. Their was a complete lack of concentration in the entire batting line up which eventually led to yet another shameful batting failure.
Concentration is not playing defensive cricket but to study the way the wicket behaves and the areas of uncertainty and adjust the approach. This can be done only by spending some time in the middle. Yesterday, Indian batsmen were either trying to hit the ball hard or trying to defend every ball irrespective of wherever it pitches. When the wicket has some juice in it for bowlers, professionalism in approach is needed and that is where the true quality of batsmen is tested. If there is one another area that Indians have to work on, then it is their ability to understand the wicket and play accordingly.
More than losing, the attitude of the captain is in spotlight here. The match got over by 7:15 and Sangakkara addressed the press conference around 7:40 PM. MS Dhoni came to address the post match press conference around 8:45 PM making reporters wait around 1 ½ hours for him. When contacted Indian team manager, who was playing soccer with the team members, he told media that Indian team have time till 10:15 PM, which was when the match was supposed to get over. Also, the Captain Cool has allegedly said that he wanted to play soccer, so he sent Sangakkara!! This agitated the reporters and they boycott the Indian Press Conference and rightly so.
The attitude of the Indian Cricket Team is not so good and the Captain is leading the way here too and Indian team manager accompanies him!!
As rightly said" Sports do not build character. They reveal it" I think no better exemplary behavior is needed to justify this wonderful maxim!!
