Career Aptitude Tests and What They Can Tell You

By: Bruce Mackay

The primary thing you ought to be doing - whether you are now entering the job market, shifting careers mid-stream, or trying to settle on what educational path you should choose – is to get to know yourself. You should start this process by taking personality tests and aptitude tests.

Personality tests will inform you about the characteristics and traits that are natural in your personality. This will give you some insight into how you cooperate with others, and why you are the way you are. Some of this information you will know already, but some may surprise you. You can check the legitimacy of the information by asking a few people that you trust to give you a straight response about individual traits you show signs of.

Career aptitude tests will depict the tasks that you are good at, and match these up with jobs and careers that you should be suited for. Occasionally the most crucial information is the jobs and careers you aren’t matched for! Being suited to specific jobs mean that you should enjoy it more, as it is always preferable to be capable to do a job well.

After you have all this information, you can explore the jobs indicated and see if they correspond with your interests and lifestyle preferences. You may want a part-time job with a lot of flexibility, or a full-time job that has set hours. Some jobs are only accessible in rural communities, and some only in big cities. Match them up with your requirements, and you should be well on your way to choosing the career that is perfect for you.
