Dental Trainees Being Prepared for Future Care of the Handicapped

By: Williays Binesd

No one is excited about going to the dentist. Some see it as a terrifying situation to be in. The fears and discomfort of handicapped people toward dental treatments are double the fears and discomfort of those with no handicaps.

How can a mentally retarded person know he needs immediate dental treatment that only a dentist can give?

How can a person in a wheelchair get to a dentist's office in a building that does not have ramps?

Because of these reasons, funding for a dental care program for handicaps began. The facility is meant to help all handicaps living in the United States and Canada. The handicapped person will not have to shell out any money. If the patient is eligible for public assistance or has insurance coverage, this method of payment will be used.

When funds cannot be found to cover the cost, the foundation of the organization shoulders the expense. They would make sure that they answer to all expenses, including hospitalization, transportation, lodging, and treatments. The expenses for each patient, not counting air travel, would add up between $350 to $550.

A hospital operating room is where much of the dental work is done while the patient is under anesthesia. Because dental and medical evaluations are done, the patient is admitted to the hospital one day ahead. By the time the patient arrives, the center will have had the information they need regarding the patient.

When handicapped patients stay in the hospital, family members stay in a room connected to the patients'. On average, patients stay in the hospital for about three and a half days. While 70 per cent of the cases so far have been handled in the hospital, outpatient care is provided where it is feasible. If it is a necessity, additional work and care may be provided.

Instead of traditional treatment, handicapped patients are instead treated under general anesthesia. Fast and comfortable treatment comes with the latest dental equipment. Shaped just like chaise lounges, the new dental chairs provide security for the patient and convenience for the dentist and the assistant.

A dentist needs to have patience in order to work with handicaps. It would be difficult if you cannot put yourself in their level. It is important to know the kind of background the person has and how he has come to see the perceptions of others toward him. The program works hand in hand with the college of dentistry in the local university. This will train future dentists in handling handicapped patients.

The sponsoring organization will take note of who the specially trained dentists are so that the patients may be directed to them. Sponsorship is available for patients who request for dental care. So far, we've had pleasant encounters with the patients' families. They're joyful for the care that the family is now receiving.
