Experience island life on Menorca

By: JUDITH DEHL

For a Mediterranean experience away from the brashness of Majorca or Ibiza, then the modest, quaint island of Menorca offers just the break you might need. With its cute marinas, its street markets, its pleasant small shops, and its harbours, Menorca is a gem among the Balearic Islands, a charming and quiet place to head to.

From one side of the island to the other you will be able to find perfect spots to while away lazy hours in the sun. The scenery all round is wonderful: the hills in particular are great for a slow-paced walk. Menorca has its fair share of historic sites too, especially in the cities of Mahon and Ciudadela. Menorca proves the claim that good things come in small packages.

All over Menorca you will be able to find somewhere to relax: with more than one hundred beaches to choose from, such as the popular Son Bou in the north or the crowded Punta Prima, you should discover a perfect spot to top up your tan, enjoy swimming in the sea, and simply unwind.

For those who want to sample the local delicacies, you will find quite quickly that Menorca loves its seafood. If you so desire, then in the harbourside restaurants you might even get the chance to see your dinner as it is brought in to be prepared for you. If you long for home fare at all, then with the remaining British influence on the island you''ll find somewhere that does a fry-up or a good Sunday roast.

The pace of life in Menorca is quieter than on the other Balearic Islands. Nonetheless if you want to up the tempo then you will find lively bars and music dens, particularly in Es Castell and Cala''n Bosch, or in the clubs at Cala''n Forcat, Son Bou and Cala''n Porter.

The two main cities, Mahon and Ciudadela, are great places to visit: the jazz cafes and trendy joints offer decent places to unwind, whilst during the day you can enjoy some retail therapy. The street markets always let tourists uncover some special finds, whilst in Mahon especially you''ll be able to enjoy high-street outlets alongside small boutiques and specialist stores.

The food markets across the island are worth a visit too: Mahon hosts fruit and veg stalls inside the Claustre del Carme whilst the crowds head to the farmer''s market by the cathedral in Ciudadela every Saturday to try the produce at the sausage and cheese stalls. Some local delicacies are a must to try, particularly the Xoriguer gin and the pungent queso de Mahon cheese.

Menorca is a quiet island, laid-back in its pace and relaxed in its lifestyle, but you will find plenty to see and do ? so much so that hiring a car might be worth it so that you can fit in as much as you can.
