It can be a traumatic time for a cat owner if their pet goes missing. Fortunately in the majority of cases the animal quickly reappears everything gets back to normal. However, there are cases when the cat is never seen again. The reasons for this are that the cat may have died whilst out or been killed or injured in a road accident. Alternatively it may just have got lost and been taken in by another family or in some cases simply returned to the wild. Very occassionally your cat, especially if it is a pedigree could be stolen. If your cat does go missing you can greatly improve your chances of being reunited with your pet if you had taken some simple security measures before hand. The most important of these is to get your cat microchipped. This is a safe and permanent method of identifying your pet. The microchip is smaller than a grain of rice and using a special devise is inserted into the cat under its skin between the shoulder blades. It is a relatively painless proceedure no more painful than a normal injection and the chip causes the cat no discomfort. Each chip has a unique number which can be scanned and checked against the owners name and address. The only thing the owner has to remember is to have the cat re chipped if they change addresses. Dependant upon which part of the world you live the cost of microchipping may vary but the avaerage appears to be around $50 (£30) with possibly a small extra fee for being added to the database. It is also important to give your cat a collar with a name tag. The tag should have your name, address and contact telphone number. You can use either an engraved metal tag or one of the barrel type containers with the information written inside. The important point is not to put your cats name on the tag as this could help a catnapper entice your trusting cat away. The final safeguard that you take should be to make sure that you have a good recent photograph of your cat. You can use this on any missing cat posters that you may put up in your area should your cat go astray. Hopefully your cat will never disappear for any length of time but there is always a chance that they may go missing. It is for that reason that you should take these three simple precautions.
