This ought to be called 'the best ways to learn Spanish' as opposed to the 'best way to learn Spanish' because everybody already knows what the best way is: spending time in a Spanish speaking country. That just might not be workable though! Living in a Spanish speaking country for at least 3 months will work wonders for your Spanish speaking, and if it is remotely viable for you to do that, then it's a no-brainer. Total immersion in any foreign language is best achieved when that language is all around us. I would say though that the best way to speak Spanish is to avoid large cities, where there are too many potential challenges that you will avoid in the provinces: a) A large city can be an unfriendly, intimidating place if you're from a rural area. You might soon be considering the best way to come home again rather than the best way to learn Spanish! b) There are often many English speakers in the biggest cities of Spain and Latin America, and this can dilute your language 'immersion' which everyone agrees is the best way to learn Spanish effectively. Of course, for many people the option of shipping out to Peru for three months just doesn't exist. So what are some of the other methods for grasping this great language? Associating with Spanish speakers is always a good one, and in many areas of the US as well as cosmopolitan English-speaking cities like London and Edinburgh you can find native Spanish speakers who will give you nothing but encouragement (most of the time!) If you like meeting new people in the city where you live, this is a good one. If you're not within reach of a big city though, or around any spoken Spanish, one of the best ways to learn Spanish is to dive into the written word. Yes - get some Spanish books, either at the library, any large book store, or Amazon (probably your best bet). Reading children's books is the best way to learn Spanish for beginners, and if you're feeling a bit braver then any books by authors like Paulo Coelho will give you a good start too. If you're more focused on the spoken word then the US has a whole gamut of Spanish-speaking cable channels that you can watch for free and immerse yourself in the language while you get ready for work - or cook paella! But by far the best way to learn Spanish quickly if you really can't go and live abroad for any period of time is to select a top quality Spanish course and stick to the task. Ideally the course should give you lots of basic conversation exercises that you can follow at your own pace, interactive games, and provide a trusty audio Spanish companion for you either at your laptop, in your iPod or in your car. Short of marrying a Spanish speaker in order to improve your Spanish (which might not be the ideal footing for a relationship!), I consider these the best ways to learn Spanish effectively, quickly and at your own individual pace.

If living abroad is not an option then a quality language CD course that can 'follow you' around has got to be one of the best ways to learn Spanish, if not THE best way to learn Spanish. Alun Maxwell works for many European companies, training (mainly though not always in English) employees to understand better the impact of their communication styles on others.
