The True Meaning of Mother''s Day

When Mother''s Day rolls around this year, noone will be surprised to see the shops fill with an array of useless merchandise - cards, pictures, gifts, wrapping paper, designed to drain every last possible penny out of the celebration.

It happens at Easter, Halloween, Christmas and New Year and even an event as simple as one designed to celebrate the most basic of human relationships has somehow been overtaken by commercial hype.

If this year, however, you want to start thinking about ways to rediscover the truer value of this annual celebration, here are a few ideas to help point you in the right direction.

As far as gifts are concerned, it is vital that you steer clear of anything designed with Mother''s Day in mind. Books designed for Mother''s Day tend to be somewhat patronising and stereotypical. Cards are often overly kitsch. Whilst you may want to embrace the spirit of the event, it does not mean that you have to embrace the myriad of commercial clich?s at the same time.

Think about what kind of gift might really mean something to your Mum. Ideally, you''ll come up with something that celebrates a little of your family history or your own special relationship? If you can''t think of anything sentimental, however, then try to think of something useful instead. If she likes painting, perhaps a new set of brushes.
